Green Riyadh Initiative: Transforming the Landscape with 7.5 Million Trees and Sustainable Water Network Projects
The Green Riyadh Initiative, a visionary project aimed at transforming the city of Riyadh, is well underway. This ambitious program is set to irrigate an impressive 7.5 million trees, spanning a colossal network of 1,350 kilometers. The initiative represents a pivotal step toward enhancing the city's green spaces and supporting its development projects.
At the heart of this transformation are the water network projects, a vital component of the Green Riyadh Initiative. These projects, which include both main networks and sub-networks connecting various districts in Riyadh, are designed to facilitate the transportation of a staggering 1.7 million cubic meters of treated water each day. The primary water networks boast diameters ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 meters, ensuring the efficient flow of water throughout the city.
To expedite the implementation process and minimize disruptions to city traffic, work on these water network projects has already commenced. The utmost care is being taken to employ best practices in irrigation, along with the utilization of a comprehensive control and monitoring system for efficient water management.
One of the key sustainable features of this initiative is remote irrigation, which aligns with Riyadh's environmental goals and emphasizes the use of 100% treated water. This approach underscores the program's commitment to utilizing renewable resources and reducing its environmental footprint.
Collaboration is at the core of the Green Riyadh Initiative. A technical team comprising representatives from government organizations and the private sector, in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, the General Irrigation Corporation, and a Water National Company, has been established. This team is dedicated to streamlining coordination efforts, overcoming obstacles, and addressing issues related to the implementation of irrigation water networks. The result is a cohesive approach that unites various programs and plans to effectively implement public utilities.
The impact of the irrigation water networks being developed by Green Riyadh extends to several major projects within the city. These include endeavors by the Public Investment Fund, the Diriyah Gate Development Authority, King Salman Park, the Sports Track, and the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project, all of which rely on these networks to achieve their objectives.
Green Riyadh, with its goal of planting more than 7.5 million trees, is one of the four primary projects for the city, originally introduced by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. This initiative, which carries the endorsement of His Highness Prince Muhammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, is instrumental in enhancing the urban environment of Riyadh. By greening residential districts, it actively contributes to the Saudi Green Initiative and the objectives outlined in the Kingdom's Vision 2030. Notably, Vision 2030 envisions the planting of 10 billion trees within the Kingdom over the coming decades, increasing vegetation coverage in Riyadh to 9.1% of the city's area. This endeavor will raise the per capita green area from 1.7 square meters to an impressive 28 square meters, marking a sixteenfold increase from the current state of affairs. The Green Riyadh Initiative is thus a beacon of progress, ushering in a new era of sustainability and prosperity for the city of Riyadh.
